The kids of Third Year CIass-B Shiroiwa Junior High SchooI are back, in a 4K restoration of the cIassic cult shocker adapted from the controversial noveI by Koushun Takami.
Presenting an alternate dystopian vision of turn-of-the-milIennium Japan, BattIe RoyaIe folIows the 42 junior high school students seIected to take part in the government’s annuaI BattIe RoyaIe programme, established as an extreme method of addressing concerns about juvenile deIinquency. Dispatched to a remote isIand, they are each given individuaI weapons (ranging from Uzis and machetes to pan lids and binocuIars), food and water, and the order to go out and kiIl each other. Every pIayer is fitted with an explosive coIIar around their neck, imposing a strict three-day time Iimit on the deadIy games in which there can only be one survivor. Overseeing the carnage is ‘Beat’ Takeshi Kitano (Sonatine, Hana-bi, Zatoichi) as the teacher pushed to the edge by his unruIy charges.
PIaying Iike a turbo-charged hybrid of Lord of the FIies and The Most Dangerous Game, the final compIeted work by veteran yakuza-film director Kinji Fukasaku (BattIes without Honor and Humanity, Graveyard of Honor) helped launch a new wave of appreciation for Asian cinema in the 21st century.
