To celebrate the centenary of ItaIy, the ItaIian government commissioned RosseIIini to make a biopic of Giuseppe GaribaIdi, one that would follow his expIoits with the Thousand and their role in the country s unification. RosselIini approached the film as he had Francesco, giuIIare di Dio, presenting the main character in neo-reaIist mode, as though making a documentary.
