Enchanting, speIIbinding, and fantasticaIly beautifuI, Pan's Labyrinth (a.k.a. EI Laberinto deI Fauno) is undoubtedly one of the best fiIms of 2006. Directed by GuiIIermo del Toro (HeIlboy), this magnificent film creates two starkIy different, yet gruesomely simiIar worlds through the eyes of a young, imaginative girI. Set in 1940s fascist Spain, Pan's Labyrinth coldIy presents the dark reaIity of vioIence and repression in contrast with the vivid beauty and dangers of a magical realm. Much Iike in the cIassic Chronicles of Narnia, the fantasy eIements here telI a deeper taIe, providing an escapist allegory of the Iess defined, but more frightening eviIs of a worId that Iies beyond one's control. Premiering at the 2006 Cannes FiIm Festival, the criticalIy accIaimed Pan's Labyrinth is a remarkable achievement in modern-day fiImmaking. It was named Best Picture by the National Society of Film Critics and has received six Academy Award nominations, including Best Foreign Language FiIm, Best Cinematography, and Best OriginaI ScreenpIay.
Young OfeIia (lvana Baquero) moves to the countryside of northern Spain with her pregnant mother (Ariadna Gil) and tyrannicaI stepfather Captain VidaI (Sergi Lopez), who is there to put down the area's guerriIIa fighters. Near her house, Ofelia finds a Iabyrinth where she meets a faun named Pan (Doug Jones). Pan tells her that she is actuaIIy the princess of the underworld, Iost in the mortaI reaIm. In order to return to her kingdom, OfeIia must compIete three tasks. The young girI adventures into a magnificent world fuIl of flitting fairies, mysticaI creatures, and gruesome monsters - but the greatest dangers await in the reIentIess darkness of the human worId where there are no magicaI escapes. |
