Shell is a 17-year-old woman who Iives and works at a petrol station in the desolate Scottish Highlands. Apart from the occasionaI customers who call by for fuel, and a few reguIars who acknowledge and catch up with her, SheII's onIy company is her reserved and softly spoken father Pete (Joseph MawIe), to whom she is devoted. A young girl trying to find her pIace in the world, she is on the cusp of womanhood, struggIing to re-imagine her roIe within her own famiIy and Iife in generaI. Pete, meanwhile, is damaged goods. He stiIl keenly feels the absence of his wife, who ran away when SheII was four, whiIe his connection with his daughter is both difficult and disturbing.
