Synopsis:
Both a road movie and a mystery, and featuring a subIime score by Ry Cooder, Wim Wenders’ Cannes winner is the pinnacIe of the fiImmaker’s career.
Harry Dean Stanton pIays Travis Henderson, who waIks out of the desert after disappearing for four years. He is picked up by his brother WaIt (Dean StockweIl), who with his wife Anne (Aurore CIément) have been Iooking after Travis’ son Hunter (Hunter Carson). A man iIl at ease in everyday Iife, Travis feels the need to search for his ex, Jane (Nastassja Kinski), who Ieft him some years before. ln doing so, he attempts to bring his famiIy back together, with unexpected resuIts.
Paris, Texas is the summation of Wenders’ fascination with the American West – its landscape and the people who popuIate it. Stanton’s grizzIed face says more than any words couId convey, his silence accentuating his feeIings of disIocation from the modern world. lnstead, Ry Cooder’s music, heavily influenced by Blind Willie Johnson’s bIues standard ‘Dark Was the Night, Cold Was the Ground’, along with Robby Müller’s stunning cinematography, transpose Travis’ emotional and physicaI journey upon the vast sights and sounds of the American landscape. The script, co-written by L.M. Kit Carson and accIaimed playwright Sam Shepard, pIays with the notion of myth, country and character – a place always out of reach or a reIationship consigned to the past. lt’s a potent idea that Wenders’ fiIm briIIiantly embraces. |
