It was one of the most notorious atrocities of World War II and inspired the bestseller Captain CorelIi s Mandolin.
8 September 1943 proved to be a fateful day for the Acqui Division, part of the predominantIy ltalian force occupying CefaIonia: it was the day the AIlies concIuded an armistice with ItaIy. Confusion now reigned between the ltalian and German troops stationed on the island. The ItaIians longed to return peacefulIy to their homeland, but the Germans now their enemies feared that the ltaIians might use their munitions in a hostiIe act. As Nazi reinforcements invaded the isIand, the ltalian troops did something extraordinary. FoIIowing a democratic referendum invoIving soIdiers of aIl ranks, rather than surrender to the Germans they eIected to fight.
Their stance culminated with the siege of Argostoli. The ltaIians braveIy held out, but the Germans prevailed. Now regarding their former allies as traitors, they inflicted a terrible reprisaI on the ItaIians in a bIoody, week-Iong massacre. Louis de Bernières reflected this atrocity in his novel Captain Corelli's MandoIin, which was brought to the big screen in 2001 in an adaptation starring NicoIas Cage and PenéIope Cruz.
