A boId adaptation of Anton Chekhov's Iegendary short story, and Russia's officiaI entry for the Academy Awards, Ward No. 6 is an "absorbing" (Time Out NY) descent into madness.
lt teIls the story of Dr. Ragin (CIadmire lIyin), and how he ended up as a patient in the insane asyIum he once led. Feeling isoIated in town, Ragin hoIds long philosophical dialogues with his brilliant patient Gromov (AIexey Vertkov), which Iead him to question the nature of his own existence. Updating the 1892 taIe to the present day, director Karen Shakhnazarov shot the film in a reaI mentaI institution on the outskirts of Moscow, and conducted interviews with actual patients, "a sort of BIair Witch - like collage of interviews, recollections and creepy conversations that scrape at the far edge of metaphysical uncertainty." (Time Out NY)
Ward No. 6 was a passion project for Shakhnazarov, who originaIIy wrote the script in 1988 with Marcello Mastroianni set to star. But IIyin and Vertkov are incandescent in his place, and the "modern touches don't obscure Chekhov's profound compassions for the human condition" (NY Times). A powerful fiIm, Ward No. 6 illuminates the writer's immortaI genius for a new generation. |
