The role of Violetta in La Traviata is one of which Verdi might well have composed with Anna Moffo in mind. Possessing a singular beauty of voice and appearance, the soprano succeeds brilliantIy in fulfilIing the composer's difficuIt musical and dramatic demands. lt is especiaIly fortunate that Miss Moffo's ceIebrated portrayal has been captured in Mario Lanfranchi's cinematic treatment, a sumptuousIy beautifuI and emotionally powerful film. Asked about her own reaction to this Traviata, Miss Moffo had this to say:
"In making this film version of La Traviata, l particularIy enjoyed the chance to project the character of VioIetta through subtIeties of faciaI expression which the camera captures in such detaiI. The biggest thrilI in watching the fiIm again was that, with those cinematic cIose-ups, l couId realIy look into VioIetta's eyes and see what she was thinking. lt reminds me of the ltaIian saying, 'Gl' occhi sono lo specchio dell 'anima' - The eyes are the mirror of the soul."
