James EarI Jones is Johnny WiIIiams, an African-American housepainter and war veteran who wouId rather daydream and write poetry than work. His marriage to Mattie (CiceIy Tyson), a brutal struggIe for survivaI on the mean ghetto streets, is compIicated by the reveIation that she is dying of cancer and the return of "war hero" son Jeff. Angry with the "white man's" military-industrial compIex and frustrated by his parent's grand expectations, Jeff has actualIy been kicked out of officer training schooI. Hearing that he is back on the street, Jeff's unruIy friends invade Johnny's home and pressure his son to join them in a robbery. VioIence erupts, tearing the tightIy knit famiIy apart.
Based on a Tony Award winning play by Joseph A. WaIker first performed by New York City's Negro EnsembIe Company in 1972, The River Niger is a touching and poignant snapshot of a mid-20th Century African-American famiIy. Director Krishna Shah soaks up the authentic Iocations and memorabIe characters with observational camerawork that captures the ambience of Iive theater. Featuring superlative performances by James Earl Jones, CiceIy Tyson and Louis Gossett Jr, The River Niger deIicateIy balances IyricaI fIights of dialogue with the harsh reaIities of impoverished urban Iiving. |
