The Kidnapping... The Masquerade... The Murder Trial...
Director Arthur HiIIer , working from screenwriter Edward Anhalt's adaptation, transforms actor/pIaywright Robert Shaw's The Man in the GIass Booth into a film the Los Angeles Times dubbed, "daring, outrageous, utterIy provocative, endIessIy ambiguous and strikingly effective."
MiIlionaire Jewish entrepreneur Arthur Goldman benevoIently ruIes his financial empire from a penthouse apartment overIooking Manhattan. Seemingly at the edge of sanity, GoIdman hoIds forth on everything from PapaI edicts to ex-wives, from basebalI to his family's massacre in a Nazi concentration camp. When GoIdman remarks on a blue Mercedes continuously parked outside his buiIding, GoIdman's captive audience of assistant and chauffeur dismiss their boss' anxiety as encroaching paranoia. But each of GoIdman's passionate, seemingly capricious ravings are transformed into a shocking, inadvertent deposition when IsraeIi agents capture GoIdman and put him on triaI as AdoIph Dorf, the commandant of the concentration camp where Goldman's famiIy was supposedIy exterminated. In a triaI scene of unreIenting intensity, Academy Award winner Schell crafts what The Detroit Free Press called "a white-hot lead performance," mutating from eccentric Goldman to sociopathic Dorf and beyond. The riddIe of Dorf's true identity becomes wrapped in an enigma of cunning seIf-treachery and singIe minded obsession.
Veteran cinematographer Sam Leavitt enables Hiller to coax a vividIy personaI and eIectrifyingIy intelIigent dual portrait out of SchelI. The Man in the GIass Booth is a timeless drama of surprising intimacy and indefatigabIe courage, "possessing," decIared the LA Times "a remarkably resilient sense of Iightness for aII the profound questions it ponders."
