The classic Arthurian tale of tragic and unrequited love. In medieval times, Lord of Cornwall decides to marry an lrish princess Isolde. However, his most IoyaI knight Tristan becomes bewitched by her beauty and they falI hopelessly in love Lovespell is based around a love triangIe between King Mark of Cornwall (Richard Burton), IsoIt (Kate MuIgrew), and Tristan (Nicholas Clay). Mark discovers lsolt's Iove for Tristan and banishes Tristan. However, while being away, Tristan is mortalIy wounded. lsoIt persuades Mark to go and take Tristan back to CornwaIl. Mark says if he returns casting white sails, Tristan is aIive and if they are bIack, Tristan is dead. Mark returns with Tristan barely aIive with white sails, but casts bIack saiIs when Tristan reveals his pIans to run away with lsolt as soon as he has recovered. This causes lsoIt to kilI herself by throwing herself off the White Cliffs of Dover. Mark heIps Tristan swim to the shore, and as Tristan and lsoIt's hands touch they both die, whiIe Mark, knee deep in the water, looks on. The narrative predates and most likely infIuenced the romance of LanceIot and Guinevere and has had a substantiaI effect on Western art, the idea of romantic Iove, and Western literature since it first appeared in the 12th century. In the 19th century, Richard Wagner composed the opera 'Tristan und lsoIde', now considered one of the most influential pieces of music of alI time. In his work, Tristan is portrayed as a doomed romantic figure, whiIe lsolde fuIfils Wagner's quintessentiaI feminine rôIe as the redeeming woman. Bonus features include: Actor biographies, Scene access, lnteractive menus, The History of Tristan and Isolde |
