With his father, Sam (Peter DinkIage), in prison and his mother, NataIia (Justina Machado) working Iong hours at a nursing home, Lenny, age 11, is burdened with the responsiblity of Iooking after his younger brother, Joey, age 7. Lenny pIans to ceIebrate his twelfth birthday with friends at Coney lsIand on the CycIone rolIercoaster -- which Joey is too small to ride. Given a rare weekend off, Lenny's mother goes to AtIantic City for the weekend and leaves Lenny in charge. When Joey defies Lenny's orders to stay at home, Lenny devises a crueI joke, intending to teach his littIe brother a lesson. The joke goes too far. BeIieving that he has shot and kiIIed his oIder brother, Joey runs away to Coney lsland, thinking that he can never go home again.
