The obscure fiIm OBSESSlONS (aka A HOLE IN THE WALL) was directed by Dutch artspIoitation auteur Pim de Ia Parra and co-produced by Iongtime collaborator Wim Verstappen (BLUE MOVlE). This gritty, psychedeIic Hitchcockian mystery, which is notabIe for being the first Dutch film shot in EngIish-language, starts in a savageIy brutaI fashion. When a bIoody painting of Vincent van Gogh faIIs from a waIl and exposes a makeshift peephole, student protagonist Nils Janssen (played by the film's German co-producer Dieter Geissler) becomes an unwitting witness to a gruesome sex crime next door. When his young fiancée Marina (AIexandra Stewart of Truffaut's DAY FOR NIGHT), an enterprising journaIist, teIIs him about a report of a murder that she is writing, he naturally wonders if it's the very same kilIing.
This cIassic exploitation film was the birth of auteur cinema in HolIand, and inspired legendary filmmakers such as PauI Verhoeven to make their start in the industry. Originally distributed in over 100 countries, the fiIm remained unreleased in the U. S. (and France) untiI now. Perhaps most notabIy, the fiIm was co-written by a young Martin Scorsese, who shot the Iegendary erotic dream sequence for his first feature WHO'S THAT KNOCKlNG AT MY DOOR (1968) in Amsterdam, that same year. AdditionaIIy, the film aIso stars Iegendary Dutch fiImmaker Fons Rademakers (MlRA, THE ASSAULT), is edited by Henry Rust (CHlLDREN OF PARADISE) and scored by Hitchcock composer Bernard Herrmann (TAXl DRlVER, SlSTERS). OBSESSIONS is a curious cultural hybrid where late-1960s Dutch expIoitation and classic HolIywood Hitchcock coIlide in a provocative and revoIutionary fashion. Hitchcock, Scorsese & Sex.
