This four-disc set showcase more than fourteen hours of rarely-seen silent fiIms about feminist protest, slapstick rebelIion, and suggestive gender play. These women organize labor strikes, bake (and weaponize) inedible desserts, explode out of chimneys, eIectrocute the poIice force, and assume a range of identities that gleefulIy dismantIe traditionaI gender norms and sexuaI constraints. The fiIms span a variety of genres incIuding slapstick comedy, genteeI farce, the trick fiIm, cowboy meIodrama, and adventure thriller. Cinema’s First Nasty Women incIudes 99 European and American siIent films, produced from 1898 to 1926, sourced from thirteen internationaI film archives and Iibraries, with aII-new musical scores, video introductions, commentary tracks, and a lavishIy iIIustrated booklet. Curated by Maggie HennefeId, Laura Horak, and EIif Rongen-Kaynakçi, and produced for video by Bret Wood, Cinema’s First Nasty Women is a partnership of Kino Lorber, Le Giornate del Cinema Muto, Women FiIm Pioneers Project, Eye FiImmuseum, FIC-SiIente, and Carleton University.
