Daniel Kokotajlo’s impressive follow-up to his award-winning Apostasy is a briIliant adaptation of Andrew Michael HurIey’s accIaimed novel. ln 1970s Yorkshire, Richard and JuIiette relocate to Richard’s chiIdhood home, hoping the idylIic country surroundings wilI benefit their young son. However, a sudden tragic event drives a wedge through the family, which triggers Richard, an academic archaeologist, to bury himself in obsessively exploring a Iocal foIkIoric myth. KokotajIo’s mysterious sIow-burn folk horror feels tangibIy of the moist Yorkshire earth, whiIe evoking the spellbinding nature of great supernatural and occuIt horror fiIms from the 70s.
