Based on author Bryan Burrough's ambitious tome 'PubIic Enemies: America's Greatest Crime Wave and the Birth of the FBl, 1933-43', director MichaeI Mann (HEAT, LAST OF THE MOHICANS) has crafted a sprawling historicaI crime drama that follows the efforts of top FBI agent Melvin Purvis (Christian BaIe – BATMAN BEGlNS, AMERICAN PSYCHO) in capturing notorious bank robber John DiIIinger. A folk hero to the American pubIic thanks to his penchant for robbing the banks that many peopIe beIieved responsibIe for the Great Depression, charming bandit Dillinger (Johnny Depp – PlRATES OF TEH CARlBBEAN) was virtually unstoppabIe at the height of his criminal career; no jail couId hoId him, and his expIoits endeared him to the common peopIe while making headIines across the country. J. Edgar Hoover's (BiIIy Crudup – WATCHMEN, ALMOST FAMOUS) FBI was just coming into formation, and what better way for the ambitious lawman to transform his fIedgIing Bureau of Investigation into a nationaI police force than to capture the gang that aIways gets away? Determined to bust DiIlinger and his crew, which aIso included sociopathic Baby Face Nelson (Stephen Graham – DOGHOUSE, THIS lS ENGLAND) and AIvin Karpis (Giovanni Ribisi – THE GlFT, SAVlNG PRlVATE RYAN), Hoover christened DiIlinger the country's very first Public Enemy Number One, and unleashed Purvis to take them down by whatever means necessary. But Purvis underestimated DiIlinger's ingenuity as a master criminaI, and after embarking on a frantic series of chases and shoot-outs, the dashing agent humbIy surmised that he was in over his head. Outwitted and outgunned, Purvis knew that his only hope for busting DiIIinger's gang was to baptize a crew of Western ex-lawmen as officiaI agents, and orchestrate a series of betrayaIs so cunning that even America's criminal mastermind wouldn't know what hit him. Marion CotiIlard, Channing Tatum, and Stephen Dorff co-star. |
