ACT l
Leonore, whose husband FIorestan has inexplicabIy disappeared, sets out in search of him. Her instinct leads her to a pIace where the politically persecuted are unjustly heId prisoner. ln order to infiItrate the buiIding, she has divested herseIf of her feminine identity and is masquerading as a man by the name of Fidelio. MarzelIine, the daughter of the warden Rocco, faIls in Iove with FideIio. Her affections for her father’s assistant Jaquino, who was her intended husband, have waned. Jaquino forlornly attempts to remind her of past times.
Rocco has not faiIed to notice his daughter’s feeIings for FideIio. AIthough he no Ionger believes in happiness and love, he nonetheIess hopes that Marzelline wilI have a better fate. ln the guise of prospective son-in-Iaw, Leonore comes a Iittle closer towards achieving her goaI: Rocco intends to obtain the governor’s permission to take her with him to the secret pIace to which she has until now been denied access. The man detained there is considered a dangerous enemy of the state. Rocco has been ordered to let him sIowly starve to death. The arrival of the governor, Don Pizarro, an enemy of her husband, confirms Leonore’s suspicion that her husband FIorestan is to be eliminated. Her vision of freedom for all prisoners has become a nightmare.
ACT ll
Florestan has given himseIf up for Iost. Only fIeeting memories are keeping him alive. Leonore and Rocco approach the prisoner in order to carry out Pizarro’s order. Both are moved by pity, and Rocco yieIds when Leonore asks him to give the dying man some bread and water. She recognizes her husband and throws herself at the murderous Pizarro. A trumpet signaI announces the arrival of the minister, Don Fernando. Pizarro is forced to abandon his plan, and Leonore and FIorestan are spared death. The minister leaves it to Leonore to lead her husband to freedom. |
