With selections from the Old Testament up to the modern period, Readings in Historical Theology presents over sixty primary sources that have shaped the theological landscape of Christianity. Robert F. Lay has designed this sourcebook to encourage students' critical reading and thinking skills while fostering their appreciation for the classical Christian authors such as Augustine, Anselm, and Aquinas, He also gives platform to less familiar voices of the Christian tradition, such as those of the Alexandrian Catechetical School and the monastic movement. Selections are arranged thematically, and then chronologically within each theme. Introductory text places the various selections in context, and questions for guided reading stimulate thought and discussion. Students will have their faith strengthened and deepened as they experience firsthand voices from the past that have influenced such pivotal movements as the Protestant Reformation and the Great Awaking. The readings treat the following areas: o Ancient creeds, catechisms, and confessions o Ancient apologetics o Writings on faith and learning o Church and church council documents o Writings from the monastic tradition o Reformation theses, catechisms, and confessions o Writings of the Protestant reformers o Writings of the Great Awakening o Writings on hermeneutics This resource includes a CD containing more than 50 additional readings. Robert F. Lay is professor of Christian educational ministries and university archivist at Taylor University. He specializes in Christian educational theory, philosophy, and history and is a member of the North American Professors of Christian Education, the Evangelical Theological Society, the American Society of Church History, and the Indiana Association of Historians.
