A SIXTEEN-YEAR-OLD DANCER IS SENT TO A PRISON "RESORT" FOR TRYING TO PROTECT HER MOTHER AND NOW TO ESCAPE, MUST TRUST A FORMER ENEMY. Set in the future where a tightly controlled technology has been developed that allows rich old people to switch bodies with poor teens. The Government of Ameca captures sixteen-year-old Eliana after she illegally switches bodies with her mother in order to protect her from a painful death. Eliana is sent to a prison camp that capitalizes on beauty, where she can trust no one, but ultimately has to put her faith in a smug, authoritative enemy, Theo Jacobson. But the more time she spends with Theo, the more she wonders if he might not be that bad after all. He might even be the answer she's been looking for all this time.
¿¿¿Mama is getting more exhausted by the day and weaker by the minute. Everything about her death is controlled. The government has mastered the Countdown; they have it down to an art. And they treat it like art, too. At some point, the government realized they couldn't have everyone live forever, so they created a "random" and "fair" system. The government vows everyone's number, or length of life, is assigned before birth, but no one in the low-status Groups believe that. We know better. We've seen the worst. They give you 100 days to prepare for your death in Ameca. Out of nowhere and at any given time, the number appears: "100." It's a digital inscription on your right wrist, like a tattoo. Every day from then on, the number decreases. The Countdown begins. My mother's number is seven today. She has one more week to live.
