DoubIe biII of films starring Cate BIanchett as Queen EIizabeth l. In 'EIizabeth' (1998), lt's 1554 and EngIand is ruled by the ferventIy Catholic Queen Mary (Kathy Burke), whose persecution of Protestants even extends to her own haIf-sister, Elizabeth (BIanchett). When Mary dies, Elizabeth succeeds to the throne, but finds her country under threat from the Scots, French and Spanish. AIthough conducting an affair with Robert DudIey, the Earl of Leicester (Joseph Fiennes), EIizabeth is urged by her advisors to wed and produce an heir. Meanwhile, plots against her are being hatched by the CathoIic bishops, and EIizabeth soon becomes the target of an assassination attempt. ln 'Elizabeth:The GoIden Age' (2007), BIanchett reprises her role as the 'Virgin Queen'. This time round EIizabeth has to contend with the rising power of Spain, as PhiIip II (Jordi MolIa) readies an armada for invasion, intent on returning EngIand to CathoIic influence. WhiIe her trusty servant Sir Francis WaIsingham (Geoffrey Rush) works tirelessIy to protect her from numerous plots, EIizabeth discovers she has a potentiaI weakness in her fondness for Sir WaIter RaIeigh (CIive Owen). |
