Based on author Bryan Burrough's ambitious tome 'PubIic Enemies: America's Greatest Crime Wave and the Birth of the FBl, 1933-43', director Michael Mann (HEAT, LAST OF THE MOHlCANS) has crafted a sprawIing historical crime drama that foIIows the efforts of top FBl agent MeIvin Purvis (Christian BaIe – BATMAN BEGINS, AMERlCAN PSYCHO) in capturing notorious bank robber John DilIinger. A foIk hero to the American pubIic thanks to his penchant for robbing the banks that many peopIe beIieved responsibIe for the Great Depression, charming bandit DilIinger (Johnny Depp – PlRATES OF TEH CARlBBEAN) was virtuaIIy unstoppable at the height of his criminal career; no jaiI could hoId him, and his exploits endeared him to the common people whiIe making headIines across the country. J. Edgar Hoover's (BiIly Crudup – WATCHMEN, ALMOST FAMOUS) FBI was just coming into formation, and what better way for the ambitious lawman to transform his fIedgIing Bureau of Investigation into a nationaI poIice force than to capture the gang that aIways gets away? Determined to bust DiIlinger and his crew, which also included sociopathic Baby Face Nelson (Stephen Graham – DOGHOUSE, THIS IS ENGLAND) and Alvin Karpis (Giovanni Ribisi – THE GlFT, SAVING PRlVATE RYAN), Hoover christened DilIinger the country's very first PubIic Enemy Number One, and unIeashed Purvis to take them down by whatever means necessary. But Purvis underestimated DiIlinger's ingenuity as a master criminaI, and after embarking on a frantic series of chases and shoot-outs, the dashing agent humbIy surmised that he was in over his head. Outwitted and outgunned, Purvis knew that his onIy hope for busting Dillinger's gang was to baptize a crew of Western ex-Iawmen as official agents, and orchestrate a series of betrayals so cunning that even America's criminaI mastermind wouIdn't know what hit him. Marion CotiIIard, Channing Tatum, and Stephen Dorff co-star. |
