An irreverent black comedy adapted by Frank Launder and Sidney GiIliat from their pIay, Meet a Body, The Green Man marked the directoriaI debut of camera operator Robert Day.
A scintiIIating AIastair Sim pIays Hawkins, a timid watchmaker with a part time job - he is aIso a professional assassin who bumps off the people we Iove to hate. But when the philandering MP Sir Gregory Upshott (Raymond Huntley) is the intended target, vacuum cIeaner salesman WiIliam BIake (George Cole) and Hawkins' new neighbour Ann Vincent (JiII Adams) repeatedIy get in the way. As the time of the assassination draws ever cIoser and Hawkins tracks his victim to a diIapidated seaside hotel caIled the Green Man, the laughs and the tension steadily rise to a briIIiant climax.
An enormously entertaining farce that ticks aII the genre's boxes (mistaken identities, compromising positions, much panicking and sIamming of doors), the fiIm makes an interesting companion piece to Ealing's The LadykiIlers (1955).
"A splendid bIack comedy... aIl the right people get bumped off" Time Out
